Joann Braam

After several years of watching the boys cross country team run along
the country roads in New Lenox where I lived as a young adult, I decided
to give it a try. That was Dec. 26, 1976. I was 21 years old.

My first race was a 10-miler. My first marathon was the Hinsdale, IL race
in 1978. With little understanding of marathon training, I ran and walked
that race in four hours and 10 minutes. I ran the Boston Marathon in 1980
in 3:07:19 and the Marine Corp Marathon in 2:54:39. My favorite marathon
is the Sept. 4, 1983 Montana Marathon in Billings where I crossed the finish
line in 2:51:19.

After taking a 20-year break from triathlon competition (I did the 1982
Madison triathlon), I've returned to the sport this year, participating in
the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon in Wisconsin. I hope to do more triathlons
in years to come, and become a stronger runner as a result.
