Marathons - 19 completed marathons, the first of which was July 4, 1979
in a time of 3:11:37. Marathon PR of 2:34:41 at the Lake County Heart
Marathon in April of 1985.
Favorite Marathon - Boston. I ran there in April of 1984
24-hour relays- Participated in 2 24-hour relays in 1983 and 1984 on the
Niles West outdoor track. The 10 man 1984 team included Niles West Oakton
runners such as Jukka Kallio,
Steve Rosenblum, Jesse Delafuente, Rocky Lee, Jim Rubey and Tony Vodicka.
Our 10-man team won the meet by 52 miles and completed 268 miles, 1040
meters at an average time of 5:25 per mile. Our top 3 runners were the
first 3 in our rotation and included myself, Steve Rosenblum and Jukka
Kallio with per mile averages of 5:05, 5:02, and 4:57, respectively.
When is the next 24 hour relay?
Most unusual accomplishment - On October 14, 1984 I ran in an
100-kilometer ultramarathon (62.1 miles) and broke the national age group
record in the 19-under age category. My time was 8:40:20. I guess my
one "claim to fame" is that I was the first one to run 100 kilometers
under 9 hours before their 20th birthday. After doing it once, I never
tried it again. Once was quite enough.
Philosophy and goals - Now that I am older, slower, and wiser, I have a
much greater appreciation for the things I did when I was younger. After
being inactive for more than 10 years, I started running again about 1
1/2 ago. Since that time I have lost 40 pounds and have lowered my 5k
time by over 4 minutes. Most of my 5k times have been in the 19's this
year, so I still have a long way to go to get back to where I was in the
past, which is what I would like to do. How realistic is that? Only
time will tell. My speed has come back much faster than my endurance.
My endurance is "shot to hell", and I very clearly don't recover as fast
as I used to from tough workouts. Need to continue to push myself in
those Wednesday workouts.
